While tarot has been around for many centuries, it is only since the 18th and 19th centuries that secret societies began to emerge as using the cards for divination. Previously the were an entertainment with no symbolic meanings and used for card games

Carl Jung was the first psychologist to attch importance to the symbology and meanings of the tarot. Recognising the major archetypes of people reflected in the major arcana. (22 face cards)

More recently Timothy Leary, also a psychologist, has suggested that tarot has a pictorial representation of human development from infant to adult. Beginning with the fool representing infancy etc.

There are literally thousands of different decks around the world.

None of any greater value than any other. Each reader will have a particular affinity to the specific decks that they use for their own reasons.

There is a belief that tarot can not be purchased for yourself. This originated in the days when books were not available so you had to be given your deck, so that the previous owner could explain the meanings to you.

Traditional Tarot decks contain 78 cards, including 22 major arcana. They each represent various meanings, depending on which interpretation or discipline you follow.

Each card represents aspects of the self and events that are happening in a person's life. The tarot are a tool that, when added to other area's of intuition or psychic ability, provide a great deal of insight and clarity to past, present and future happenings.
